La Prima Espresso Company

La Prima Espresso Company was founded on October 1, 1988, by Sam Patti in Pittsburgh's Strip District, beginning as a working showroom for espresso machines that evolved into a roastery. The company now roasts approximately 4,600 pounds per week on a 35 kilo Loring Kestrel, producing over 20 coffee and espresso blends including four Italian style preparations. Fourteen of La Prima's 24 coffees carry PCO Certified Organic status, with separate handling throughout roasting to maintain certification integrity. The company also holds Fair Trade certification and has expanded to five café locations across Pittsburgh, including an Oakland outpost that opened in April 2025. Patti's original mission of bringing authentic Italian espresso culture to Pittsburgh has now sustained the business for more than 35 years.
