Rwanda Dukunde Kawa Mbilima

Rwanda Dukunde Kawa Mbilima

Lighthouse Roasters

About This Coffee

Grown in the mineral-rich high peaks of Northern Rwanda, this exceptional washed Bourbon comes from the renowned Dukunde Kawa cooperative. Sitting at a breathtaking 2,020+ meters, the Mbilima washing station benefits from a cool microclimate that slows cherry ripening, allowing deep, complex sugars to develop late into the harvest season. Dukunde Kawa is a beacon for sustainable specialty coffee-over 80% of its workforce is women, and the cooperative holds multiple awards for both sustainability and cup quality (including top placements in Rwanda's Cup of Excellence). Expect a bright, complex cup with vibrant notes of zesty lime and orange, balanced by deep chocolate and a crisp cola finish.

Lighthouse Roasters

Lighthouse Roasters has been roasting coffee in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood since 1993, operating from the same 120 year old Craftsman building where it started. The centerpiece of the operation is a vintage 1952 Gothot cast iron drum roaster, a machine the team has adapted over three decades to produce a depth of character they believe modern automated equipment cannot replicate. The 15 person team brings over 250 years of combined roasting and barista experience, with many staff members having worked at Lighthouse for 10, 15, or more than 25 years. Sourcing priorities lean toward clean, sweet, well structured coffees from producers and cooperatives who share the same commitment to craft. The roastery has remained independent and intentionally small, preferring to let the vintage roaster and the consistency of its people define the quality.
