Ka'u Maragogipe | Giant Elephant Bean

Big Island Coffee Roasters

About This Coffee

Maragogipe is a natural mutation of Typica known for its unusually large beans, sometimes called elephant beans. Grown in Ka'ū on Hawaii's Big Island, this lot shows the variety's characteristic brightness and floral character. The cup opens with stone fruit and jasmine, moves through peach and cherry, and carries a thread of honey sweetness underneath. Depending on roast level, you'll find darker chocolate and spice tones emerging in the medium-dark version, while the medium-light brings out more of the bergamot, hop flower, and pistachio notes with a sweet musk finish. The clarity is layered and elegant throughout.

Big Island Coffee Roasters

In 2010, Kelleigh Stewart and Brandon von Damitz answered a Craigslist ad that would transform them from coffee novices into Hawaii's most awarded craft roasters, beginning with a three-acre farm in the remote Puna region. Today, their operation showcases the widest variety of 100% Hawaiian coffees worldwide, milled in small batches and roasted-to-order, with quality, community and sustainability at their core. From their new café in Hilo, Big Island Coffee Roasters celebrates the entirety of their island bounty while building community and uplifting the farmers who make it all possible.
